"PHOENIX" CUT-OUTS
SPIRIT / GALLERY
Caroline Bergonzi’s initiation to the arts of metal (welding and casting) showed that she was a natural. Indeed, a unique style emerged from her creations, the fruit of her inner sense of dimensions, flows, weight, and equilibrium… from drawing (2D) an improvised piece onto a sheet of metal and cutting it all out in space (3D)…
Her central theme has mainly been the one of the Phoenix, firebird…
CAROLINE BERGONZI PROCESS
The Phoenix series illustrates rebirth and transformation. Technically, the transformation is quite simple. A sheet of metal, rectangular if not square. A drawing, hand made by the artist, and cut out very precisely, by herself, to form from two to three dimensions the artwork, in one piece only. The first ones were mostly winged semi-abstract shapes. Caroline Bergonzi calls this her Phoenix technique, a method quite intense and time-consuming, which requires a meditative state and sharp focus.
